An independent medical examination — an IME — is a physician’s evaluation of an injured or ill person conducted at the request of a third party: an insurer, an employer, or counsel, most often in workers’ compensation, personal injury, and disability matters. The report that follows the examination is evidence. It is read by adjusters, opposing counsel, and judges, and its exact wording carries consequence.
